R-44-95 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF COLTON IN SUPPORT OF SAVING THE <br />ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN INCLUDED IN THE 1994 <br />VIOLENT CRIME CONTROL AND LAW ENFORCE- <br />MENT ACT OF 1994 <br />WHEREAS, Americans overwhelmingly support common sense gun <br />laws that keep assault weapons out of the hands of criminals and terrorists; <br />and, <br />WHEREAS, efforts are underway to repeal the common sense gun <br />laws that were included in the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law <br />Enforcement Act of 1994, which was singed into law by President Clinton <br />on September 13, 1994; and, <br />WHEREAS, Congress is considering legislation (HR 1488) which not <br />only would repeal the ban on 19 specific semiautomatic assault weapons and <br />their large capacity ammunition magazines, but also subject cities and <br />towns to fines for enforcing local ordinances banning or limiting firearms; <br />and, <br />WHEREAS, enactment of this legislation could have a significant <br />impact on local budgets, local authority, and, most important, safety in our <br />communities; and, <br />WHEREAS, the National League of Cities has declared 1995 as a <br />year for Rethinking Public Safety by creating new partnerships that will <br />lead to positive action, increasing public awareness about civic <br />
