Kenny, Director of Parks, Recreation & Family Services SUBJECT: Approval of Funding for the Trimming of all Trees in Cesar E. Chavez Park DATE: July 26, 2001 BACKGROUND: Most of the park trees in the City's parks have not been properly trimmed in a number of years. The trees have begun to "self prune themselves" and fall into the parks creating a safety hazard. Staff is recommending that these trees be trimmed by a certified arborist that would not only do the trimming, but do it in such a way as to protect them as well. DISC USSIONIANALYSIS: Although the Public Works Department does operate a three man "tree crew" for street tree projects, the crew is more often utilized for various street projects. The Parks Division of the Parks, Recreation & Family Services Department does very limited trimming. Neither department has the available manpower to tackle the scope of work proposed for Chavez Park. There are a total of 148 trees of varying species within the park. Staff has solicited and received four written bids from reputable tree services. They range in cost from $12,860 to $35,520. All bids submitted are attached. Two of the four bids are below the $15,000 formal bid limit. FINANCIAL IMPACT: Because this is not a budgeted item, staff is requesting that funds be appropriated in the amount of $12,860, the lowest responsible bid. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: None. RECOMMENDATION: City Council appropriate funding in the amount of $12,860 for the trimming of 148 trees in Cesar E. Chavez Park.
