CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
Cno riTv rni lKinu U==TIAIr2 nr n=r-=URFR 4Q 2nnr
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
FROM: Bill Smith, Community Services Director
ITEM #9
SUBJECT: Approve Acceptance of the County of San Bernardino,
Department of Nutrition 2006 Mini Grant, in the Amount of
$2,236.60, for the Recreation Division `Mission . . Nutrition
Program', and Approve and Adopt a Resolution Amending the
Approved Budget for Fiscal Year 2006-07, to Reflect Receipt of the
said Grant and the Allocation for Expenditure.
DATE: 12 December 2006
BACKGROUND:
In early 2006, the Recreation Division of the Community Services department applied and
received approval for the funding of the "Mission ... Nutrition" program. The goal of this
program was to motivate adults and families in Colton to improve the quality of their diets, through
education regarding the need for fruit and vegetable consumption and regular physical activity.
The program was incorporated into the existing Drop in Recreation programs held at the Luque
and Gonzales Community Centers. During the eight week period from July 3 through August 25,
2006, twice weekly activities included instruction on making healthy snacks, learning about
nutrition, helping children develop a healthy body image, increasing aerobic activity, reaching and
maintaining a healthy body weight, introduction to the NEW Food Guide Pyramid, the importance
of breakfast, portion size and healthy food choices, reducing TV screen time and increasing daily
intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. The key goals were increasing physical activity and
improving quality snacking. The program strove to provide a program that the target audience
both enjoyed and learned from
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
- Cverall, both staff members and Colton residents benefited from the "Mission ... Nutrition"
program. Of the proposed budget, $2,236.60 was used to provide Nutrition Education curriculum,
purchase food for the twice weekly cooking/snack preparation demonstrations and sampling by
the participants and other incidental expenses. This funding from the County of San Bernardino,
Department of Nutrition program, is reimbursement for funds used to implement the eight week
program.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
There is no net general fund impact from this grant. The funds, totaling $2,236.60, should be
placed into City expenditure account number 100-6200-6209-2301, which will offset expenditure
funds already spent on the program.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
None
CONFLICT OF INTEREST
None
