CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF MARCH 6, 2007
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: Daryl Parrish, City Manager
SUBJECT: Approve a Salary Survey for the Position of Police Chief
DATE: February 20, 2007
BACKGROUND:
ITEM #9
A salary survey for the position of Police Chief has not been performed by Human Resources in
quite some time. The Police Chief position has received cost of living adjustments in July 2006
and will again receive one in July 2007. A market study is warranted for the position.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
Based on the information Human Resources receives from surrounding communities, it is apparent
the salary for the position of Police Chief is not at average with competing agencies as it once was.
The agencies Colton uses for comparison have received substantial increases over the last 18
months. These have been as a result of contract negotiations or charter requirements. As a result
of these increases, Colton's salary has fallen behind.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The financial impact is unknown at this time. More financial analysis will be presented to the
Council when the survey is complete. We anticipate a short turnaround to complete the total
compensation salary survey.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
None.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST — Gift Disclosure Requirements
None
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the Honorable Mayor and City Council approve a salary survey for the
position of Police Chief.
Attachment: None.
_4_
Prepared b : Antnony Arroyo, numdn Kut-uui t— «+
REVIEW TEAM ONLYI
City Attorney: Finance Director:'b-
OTHER:
City Manager:_ CSO, 1
