CITY OF COLTON AGENDA REPORT FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF FEBRUARY 5, 2008 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL FROM: Jeannette Olko, Electric Utility General Manager ITEM #5 SUBJECT: Approve Request for Recruitment and Ratification of Employee Appointment to the Full-time Position of Power Line Technician Apprentice in the Electric Department. DATE: January 29, 2007 BACKGROUND: Due to the difficulty hiring qualified journey level power line technicians, the Electric Utility has established an apprenticeship program. The Electric Utility has the ability to train and educate its apprentices' to the level of Journeyman. There is a need to continuously train qualified personnel to meet the Utility's needs in order to maintain steady and reliable service to the citizens of Colton. The salary range for the Power Line Technician Apprentice is $4,996-$6,073 per month. DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:. There are currently two vacancies for Power Line Technician. The Electric Utility would like to continue its Apprentice Training Program and under fill the vacant positions with Power Line Technician Apprentices. FINANCIAL IMPACT: The existing vacant positions are budgeted for the 2007/08 fiscal year, in Account Number 520- 8000-8004-1010-0580-000, Electric Department/Transmission and Distribution, Miscellaneous Salaries. As of January 29, 2008, funds available in this account are $753,767.38. ENVIROMENTAL IMPACT: None. CONFLICT OF INTEREST: None RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the City Council approve the request to establish an eligibility list for the position of Power Line Technician Apprentice and to authorize staff to recruit and ratify employee appointments to under fill the Power Line Technicians with Power Line Technician Apprentices.
