CITY OF COLTON <br />AGENDA REPORT <br />For the Council Meeting of December 2, 1997 <br />To: Honorable Mayor & City Council <br />Approval: Len Wood, Interim City Manager <br />From: Randy Anstine, Neighborhood Services Directo j <br />Subject: Approval of Submission of Grant Proposal to State Department <br />of Education for Literacy -Based School Age Child Care <br />Date: November 24, 1997 <br />BACKGROUND: <br />The State Department of Education is presently soliciting grant proposals for <br />implementation of specialized center -based School -Age Community Child Care Services, <br />referred to as Literacy Latchkey programs. Award of these funds will allow the City of <br />Colton to provide a comprehensive, coordinated, and cost effective child care and <br />development program for eligible families and children, including a full range of <br />supervision, health and support services through a full and part-time program. According <br />to State Guidelines, the City of Colton has been determined to be a Priority One <br />community. A Priority One ranking indicates that Colton will be considered a first priority <br />community to receive funding. <br />These one time funds do not require a local dollar match. This is a 100%grant funded <br />program. If approved, the grant funds will be utilized to provide the following: <br />• Serve as an collaboration effort with the school district, CBO's and the public <br />• Assist in reducing criminal activity <br />• Provide programs that are age appropriate, including academic, cognitive, <br />linguistic, and other special needs of children <br />• Provide academic support to children <br />• Strengthen parent-child relationships <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: <br />No match is required. Once the grant is approved and received by the City, the State <br />Department of Education would then provide an annual grant allocation to the City of <br />Colton in order to subsidize this program. <br />Randy AnstinF:, Neighborhood Services Director <br />Item # 21 <br />
