CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF NOVEMBER 18, 1997
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
APPROVAL: Len Wood, Interim City Manager
Dennis Morris, Interim Personnel Director
FROM: Thomas T. Hendrix, Acting Fire Chief f
SUBJECT: Approval of Leave of Absence Extension
DATE: November 11, 1997
BACKGROUND:
On May 31, 1997 Kristina Goerlich, Fire Department Administrative Secretary, requested a six
month leave of absence, effective June 5, 1997, due to a serious medical condition. Her request
was approved by Gracie Fernandez -Harmon, Acting City Manager. Ms. Goerlich requested an
extension of this leave of absence on October 29, 1997.
DISCUSSIONJANALYSIS:
Ms. Goerlich's physician believes she will be able to return to work sometime in January 1998,
However, her six month leave of absence granted by Gracie Fernandez -Harmon expires on
December 5, 1997. City Personnel Rule XI, Section 5, requires City Council approval for leaves
of absence longer than six months. Given the possibility of further medical delays in Ms.
Goerlich's return to work, an extension of six months is respectfully requested.
ALTERNATTVES:
Deny Ms. Goerlich's request for a six month leave of absence extension would result in her
resignation of employment with the City of Colton.
FINANCIAL :IMPACT:
Salary savings of approximately $2521.00 per each month of absence.
RECOMMENDATION:
Ms. Goerlich is a highly valued employee, and it is recommended that the City Council approve
this 6 month leave of absence extension.
Item # 11
