C LION
December 10, 2002
City of Colton
Mayor Deirdre H. Bennett
Honorable Members of the City Council
650 N. La Cadena Drive
Colton CA 92324
Dear Madam Mayor and Honorable Members of the City Council,
Item #16
Greetings during this busy holiday season, wouldn't it be nice if all this went away so we could just celebrate
and spend time with family? But life goes on; especially in the world we live, of business and government.
With the recent cut in funding from the State of California to municipalities and redevelopment agencies, the
need to restructure monies budgeted to the Chamber has become necessary, and crucial. As you are
aware, Daryl Parrish, Colton City Manager, and I have met several times since September, regarding the
devastating withdrawal of budgeted funding from the City of Colton to the Colton Chamber of Commerce.
With our budget based on an approved two-year City budget committing $51,000 per year to the Chamber,
and the unanticipated withdrawal of $25,500 for this fiscal year, half of the allocated amount expected, and
representing just less than 25% of our total annual budget, we are — to put it bluntly — in dire straits.
In a meeting I attended earlier today, with Daryl Parrish and Gary Thornberry of California Portland Cement
Company (Immediate Past President of the Colton Chamber of Commerce), the attached information
brochure was reviewed, and various scenarios were discussed. The brochure was produced specifically for
you and the City Manager. It is an information piece, covering several current and prospective services of
the Chamber to the City of Colton.
Just a simple calculation of estimated consulting fees to produce quarterly luncheon events would total more
than the amount of funding currently cut from the City allocation to the Chamber. Previous discussions with
Daryl Parrish and Candace Cassel, RDA Manager, have indicated a desire for the Chamber to take over as
producer of the City -sponsored business luncheons. Additional suggestions have included public relations
work, marketing of the City of Colton, liaison efforts and other related services, as well as alternative
departments within the City as the source for the replacement of withdrawn funding. Several weeks ago, a
copy of my resume was provided to the City Manager. I am including a copy for your perusal also.
The Colton Chamber of Commerce is eager to reaffirm our partnership with the City and redefine the
services most beneficial to both entities within that partnership. And personally, it would be a pleasure for
me to work more closely with the City, and use my skills and experience to benefit even more directly Team
Colton. The goal of the Chamber is to work with the City in formulating a 3 -year business plan that
compliments the efforts of the City of Colton.
Thank you for your time, please feel free to call me with any questions. If not in the office, I can often be
reached on my cell phone at 909-732-9177.
Best regards and Merry Christmas,
620 N.
