CITY OF COLTON
MEMORANDUM
Office of the Mayor & Council Members
Date: June 27, 2002
To: Honorable Mayor Pro Tem & Council Members
From: Mayor Deirdre Bennett
Subject: Sister City Program
Mayor REQ: 105
Informational Item
On June 26, 2002, I met with a representative from the Mexican Consolate. The purpose
of the meeting was to discuss a request from Rio Grande, Zacatecas, Mexico. Their
request was to become Sister Cities. Becoming sister cities is not a financial obligation,
but, an agreement to share our cultures.
There is an urgency to this item because the Mayor, and possibly the Governor of
Zacatecas will be in town on July 5, 2002, and, at that time, they would like us to
formalize a sister city agreement with a ceremony. Due to the urgency, this item has
been placed on the July 2nd Council Agenda to determine whether or not there is an
interest to participate. We made a clear statement that our Council works together on
projects such as this and that it would only go forward if everyone agreed it was a worthy
project.
In many ways, this project fits in with the direction given to staff at our June 10t1i and 11`'
Workshops. I am confident that each of you will find this project to be beneficial to our
community. Because of the short notice, we are tentatively making arrangements to
proceed with the signing ceremony ---these plans can be canceled if the Council chooses
not to participate in the Sister City Program.
As you may be able to read from this memo, I am excited about this positive project and
look forward to the opportunity we have before us. By joining forces, we have an
opportunity to work towards the larger scale effort of improving our International
relations.
Thank you.
F0119 -6-F.
