The Police Department hopes to reduce pedestrian
involved fatal and injury traffic collisions and intends to accomplish this through the purchase of an
in -roadway lighted crosswalk system.
An "in -roadway lighted crosswalk system" will be purchased and installed in a high traffic area of
the city to enhance driver awareness of pedestrians crossing the roadway. Statistics will be
gathered prior to, and after, installation to determine the effectiveness of the system. The original
request of the grant was for several crosswalk systems, however, the grant has been approved by
the State of California Office of Traffic Safety to fund one (1) system. The exact location of that
system will be determined at a later date. The amount of the mini -grant is $20,500.00.
ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION:
The Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) received our request for a grant for several lighted crosswalk
systems. After review by the Office of Traffic Safety and in accordance with the amount of funds
available to be distributed for the grants to various cities, the Office of Traffic Safety awarded the
City of Colton a grant for $20,000.00 to be used for the purchase of one lighted crosswalk system
and $500.00 for mandated training/seminar. The exact location for the installation of the single
system has not been determined at this time. Areas of consideration will be, but not limited to,
areas surrounding the High School or an area near Plaza Las Glorias on Mt. Vernon Ave. The
Public Works Department and The Electric Department has agreed to assist with some of the labor
of the installation of the system. The grant has been approved by the Office of Traffic Safety
pending acceptance by the City Council.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
None.
RHlm
