Item #9
CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF February 18, 2003
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council n,✓
FROM: Ron Kenny, Director of Parks, Recreation & Family Services
SUBJECT: Request to Solicit Bids for the Demolition of the Concrete Block Bleachers in
Veteran's Park
DATE: February 11, 2003
BACKGROUND
On December 3, 2002 the City Council approved the demolition of the concrete block bleachers which are
adjacent to the ball field in Veteran's Park.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
Following approval, staff contacted an independent demolition contractor and requested a cost estimate
concerning the demolition. The contractor felt that the job would be a small one and that the City could
expect a cost of under $5,000.
Staff then contacted three demolition companies by phone in an effort to get the project completed as
quickly as possible. However, only one company submitted a bid and it was for $15,000. Because the bid
was over $5,000 the project was then deemed a "Public Works Project", which requires the use of the formal
bid process.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The proposed project is estimated to not exceed $20,000. The City's Park Development Fund will provide
funding for the project using Account #248-6950-6955-3890.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
The proposed project qualifies for Categorical Exemption under section 15301(1)— Demolition and removal
of individual small structures.
For proper disposal, an asbestos study of the bleacher's roof material will be conducted prior to the
demolition.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends City Council authorizes staff to solicit bids for the demolition of the concrete block
bleachers in Veteran's Park.
REVIEW TEAM ON Y
City Attorney: Finance Director:
City Manager: U OTHER:
