Item #13
CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF March 16, 2004
TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council
FROM: Ron Kenny, Community Services Director
SUBJECT: Request to Use the Colton Civic Center Parking Lot for a Child Car Seatl
Inspection Clinic on Saturday, May 15, 2004, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
DATE: March 8, 2004
BACKGROUND:
The California Highway Patrol has contacted the City requesting the City's Community Services
Department co-sponsor a Child Car Seat Inspection Clinic. State Farm Insurance would also
be a co-sponsor of the event.
ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION:
The Clinic would be held Saturday, May 15, 2004 in the Civic Center parking lot. This would be
the same day as the City's Unity Day Celebration in Cesar Chavez Park, but staff feels it would
enhance Unity Day, not detract from it. Staff from both the CHP and the Community Services
Department's Early Childhood Education Division would work the event.
The CHP would inspect car seats and instruct parents on the "do's" and "don'ts" of child car
seats. Those parents attending the clinic would receive a new car seat if their current seat(s)
fail the inspection. The CHP plans to have approximately 100 car and booster seats on hand
for the event.
The parking lot would be closed except for those families participating in the Clinic. The Early
Childhood Education staff have already contacted the Police Department for traffic flow
assistance. Lt. Mark Owens will work with staff on the day of the event to help insure safety.
Clinic services will be on a first come, first served basis.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There would be no General Fund impact to the City.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that City Council approve the use of the Colton Civic Center Parking Lot for
a Child Car Seat Clinic on Saturday, May 15, 2004, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
REVIEW TEAM O Y
City Attorney:
' Finance Director:
City Manager: OTHER:
