CITY OF COLTON AGENDA REPORT FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF October 5, 2004 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL FROM: Tom Hendrix, Fire Chief SUBJECT: Approve Request for Recruitment and Ratification of Employee Appointment to the Position of Firefighter Medic DATE: September 27, 2004 Item #6 BACKGROUND: The existing Firefighter Medic eligibility list has been exhausted and the Fire Department is requesting approval to establish a new list. Attached is the job description for Firefighter Medic; the salary range is $4,050.30 - $4,923.19. DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: The Fire Department does not currently have any vacant positions; however, in the event of an unexpected vacancy, it will take approximately five to six months to complete the recruiting process and create a new eligibility list. During this period, the position would have to be filled with overtime. If a current eligibility list is maintained, the amount of time required to fill an unexpected vacancy can be reduced to about six weeks. Recruitment for said position will be conducted and an eligibility list established upon Council approval. The candidate chosen will meet the education and experience requirements as specified in the job description. FINANCIAL IMPACT: Funds for the position have been budgeted in the 2004-05 Fiscal Year from Account Number 100-6090-6091-1010 (Salaries) and 100-6090-6091-1100 (Salary Related Benefits). ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: None. CONFLICT OF INTEREST None. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council approve the request for recruitment and ratification of employee appointment to the full-time position of Firefighter Medic in the Fire Department.
