CITY OF COLTON <br />CITY COUNCIL <br />ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING MINUTES <br />AUGUST 14, 2001 <br />In accordance with notice duly and legally given, an Adjourned Regular Meeting of the City <br />Council of the City of Colton was held on the above -given date at 5:10 p.m., in the Council <br />Chambers of City Hall, Mayor Bennett presiding. <br />FLAG SALUTE: <br />Mayor Bennett. led the Pledge of Allegiance <br />ROLL CALL: <br />CM Donald J. Sanders <br />CM Kelly J. Chastain <br />CM Sarah Zamora <br />City Manager Parrish <br />PUBLIC COMMENT <br />None. <br />AGENDA REVIEW: <br />Richard A. DeLaRosa (Present at 5:14 p.m.) <br />CM Helen A. Ramos <br />Mayor Deirdre H. Bennett <br />Assistant City Clerk Delgado <br />MAYOR AND COUNCIL ITEMS: <br />ACTION ITEM: <br />Census 2000 and Redistricting <br />City Attorney Derleth <br />City Manager Parrish introduced Attorney Angie Castillo who provided a brief overview <br />summary of the City's history on districts and reported that Census 2000 data, released March <br />2001, revealed Colton's total population at 47,662, an increase of 18.5%. Allowing for a 1% <br />deviation, she stated that the ideal district's population would be 7,944. Attorney Castillo stated <br />that Council could proceed with redistricting, along with a modification, if it elected to do so. <br />She reported on the redistricting criteria: Equal population; adherence to the Voting Rights Act; <br />respect Community of Interests; follow natural and man-made boundaries to the extent possible; <br />strive for compactness and ensure contiguity; need to encourage citizen input; and, compare <br />population growth to the existing districts. <br />City Council Adj.
