CITY OF COLTON AGENDA REPORT For Council Meeting of July 17, 1990 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Jaime Aguilera, Community Development Directoroll__�� SUBJECT: Street Name Change from Barton Rd. to Washington Date: July 9, 1990 St. - File No. D-31-90 BACKGROUND: The Planning Commission is requesting Council consideration to allow that portion of roadway between the junction of Washington St. and Barton Rd., westerly to Waterman Ave. to be renamed Washington St. from its present name of Barton Rd. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: The Traffic Committee feels this action is necessary due to future changes in the street alignment which will alter the existing traffic pattern from one of a merging oblique intersection to a 900 or right-angle intersection. Unless the roadway is renamed, the new roadway configuration will result in Barton Rd. making a 90° right-angle turn and also make this intersection the terminus of Washington St. Unless the mile long section of roadway between the intersection of Barton Rd. and Washington St. and Waterman Ave. is given one name, the public may refer to this length of roadway as either Barton Rd. or Washington St. Due to the extensive development occurring along this section of roadway, Public icrkms safety personnel's quick response efforts may be hampered due to confusion caused by ambiguous street names. ALTERNATIVES: There are only two alternatives, either change the street name in order to facilitate the flow of traffic, or leave the existing names as they are. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. RECC@MENDATION: Staff recommends that Council approve of File No. D-31-90 and thereby approve the street name change Barton Road as reviously described.
