CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
For Council Meeting of June 5 1990
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Gale A. Drews, Electric Utility Director
SUBJECT: REPAIR OF ELECTRIC UTILITY's Date: May 30, 1990
HEAVY-DUTY EQUIPMENT
BACKGROUND
The Department has (3) Digger derrick trucks, (1) Two-man aerial -lift
truck, and ( 1 ) One-man aerial -lift truck. The digger derrick trucks are
assigned to the three Line Construction crews and the one-man aerial -lift
is used by the Service Crew. The two-man aerial -lift is used as needed by
all crews. All of -the trucks mentioned have hydraulic pumps and lines that
power the booms and other equipment. The City's Automotive Shop does not
have personnel or the expertise to repair these units, therefore, all of
the trucks must be sent out for repair and service.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Since the equipment is an intregal part of our line construction and
service crews, and the safety of our personnel makes it imperative that
such equipment is kept in proper working order, repairs must be made
immediately when any malfunctions occur. Some repairs that are necessary
are in excess of the $5,000 limit presently allowed without having to go
out to bid. If the Department has to wait for Council approvals through
the bidding process, many man-hours will be lost and rescheduling of work
will cause delays in some construction.
ALTERNATIVES
(1) Have a hydraulic mechanic to work for the Electric Utility,
(2) Hire a hydraulic mechanic to work in the City Automotive Shop with
this equipment being repaired on a priority basis,
(3) Allow the Electric Utility to have this equipment repaired on an
emergency basis with the City Manager's approval if the cost is to
exceed $5,000.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
Alternatives (1) & (2) - Estimated $54,000/year salary and benefits.
Alternative ( 3 ) - no change.
F►L ; 12, b0 : I..................
Page I of __
OR Item No.-_I/,a__
