HLJTTON, PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR SUBJECT: Renaming of Colton Municipal Park Back rg ound: Recently a proposal to rename Colton Municipal Park to Cesar Chavez Park was presented to the City Council. The City Council referred the matter to the Parks and Recreation Commission for review of the proposal and to provide a recommendation to the City Council. Discussion: The Parks and Recreation Commission reviewed the renaming of Municipal Park and by oral presentation, reported its recommendation for the renaming to the City Council at the Council Meeting of October 4, 1994. At the Joint City Council and Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting held on October 12, 1994, the Commission by unanimous vote, reaffirmed its recommendation to the City Council for the renaming of the park to Cesar Chavez. Attached is the City Attorney's legal opinion, stating that the City Council has the right to consider naming or renaming any City Park under the existing Resolution No. R -166A-93, absent any physical restriction on the legal vested deed. No restriction was found on the deeds for Colton Municipal Park. Recommendation: Staff recommends that the City Council consider approving the recommendation of the Parks and Recreation Commission to rename Colton Municipal Park to Cesar Chavez Park. Should Council approve the renaming of the park, adoption of the attached resolution would be in order. Ci ager's Con urrence: '002- atch: (2)
