CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
For Council Meeting of September 6, 1994
TO: Honorable Mayor, City Council, and City Manager
FROM: Thomas K. Clarke Acting Electric Utility Director-4( DATE: 08/22/94
SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF PURCHASE OF MULTIPLEXOR FOR CONTINUED
COM1VlTJNICATION BETWEEN THE HP 3000 AND ELECTRIC
DEPARTMENT ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES
BACKGROUND
Recently a problem occurred with the Electric Department's communication with the HP 3000
computer located in City Hall. The cause of this difficulty was found to be a defective multiplexor
located in the Utility's administrative offices.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Communication to the HP 3000 is vital to the operations of this Department. Some of the essential
tasks involved in these communications are: transference of meter reading data for billing
purposes, General Ledger access, Certificate of Occupancy releases (C of O's), customer
information access, and printing of employee Personnel Action Records.
ALTERNATIVES
In some cases there are none, in others it would be time-consuming and costly to have employees
commuting between locations to transfer, acquire, or drop off necessary information for the daily
operations of the Utility. This used to be the case and is why the system was originally installed.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
Cost of the new unit replacement is $2,181.94.
Page 1 of .2 Item No. IL
