R-122-15 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLTON <br />SUPPORTING THE CALIFORNIA LEGISLATURE ASSEMBLY <br />CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 56 (ACR 56): OFFICIAL STATE PET <br />WHEREAS, Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 56, Chapter 184, sponsored by <br />Assembly Member Eric Linder, was filed with the California Secretary of State on September <br />21, 2015. This measure declares a "shelter pet" as the Official State Pet. <br />WHEREAS, In the United States, there are an estimated eight million abandoned pets <br />living in animal shelters and three to four million of these dogs and cats are euthanized every <br />year. An estimated 30% of pets in family homes are from shelters, and each year, this leaves <br />millions of pets in shelters that are not adopted; and <br />WHEREAS, On October 15, 2015, the Riverside County's largest animal shelter <br />hosted a press conference on the state resolution (ACR 56) and celebrated with a special <br />shelter pet adoption event. During the event, the Riverside County Animal Shelter offered <br />free available pets and asked pet -adopters to make a donation to the Riverside County's Spay <br />and Neuter Fund Program. The funds received shall provide spay and neuter services for <br />qualified pet owners. The program will allow adopters to support the limit of numbers of cats <br />and dogs that end up in local shelters each and every year; and <br />WHEREAS, California's shelter pets have gained official recognition by the State <br />Legislature and increased the public's awareness of shelter animals; and <br />WHEREAS, The Shelter Pet will join California's 37 existing official symbols, <br />ranging from the State Flower (Golden Poppy) to the State Soil (San Joaquin Soil). The <br />shelter pet of California has raised public awareness and education that will encourage people <br />to save a shelter animal's life by adopting a pet from their local animal shelter. Every <br />adoption makes a difference for the animals and animal shelters. <br />1 <br />
