ITEM #2
CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF May 16, 2006
TO: HONORABLE CHAIRPERSON AND UTILITY AUTHORITY MEMBERS
FROM: ERIC R. FRASER, DIRECTOR OF WATER & WASTEWATER OPERATIONS
SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF REQUEST FOR RECRUITMENT AND RATIFICATION OF
ONE EMPLOYEE APPOINTMENT TO THE FULL-TIME POSITION OF
WASTEWATER MECHANIC -IN -TRAINING FOR THE WASTEWATER
DEPARTMENT.
DATE: May 8, 2006
BACKGROUND:
The Water/Wastewater Department is requesting recruitment for a Wastewater Mechanic -in -
Training due to the difficulty recruiting qualified candidates for the Wastewater Mechanic position.
The salary range is $2556 to $3108.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
The department currently has a vacancy for a Wastewater Equipment Mechanic but has had
continued difficulty recruiting qualified candidates for this position. Based on the current needs of
the Department, underfilling the Wastewater Mechanic position with the Mechanic -in -Training
position is appropriate and will allow the Wastewater Department to hire at entry level and train an
employee to progress to the Mechanic level. The Mechanic -in -Training will be trained under the
current Wastewater Mechanic II and under the direct supervision of the Wastewater Utilities
Manager.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
Sufficient funds are available in Capital Improvement Account, Number 522-8200-8200-1010
(Salaries) and 522-8200-8200-1100 (Related benefits).
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
None
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the Colton Utility Authority approve the recruitment and ratification of one
employee appointment to the full-time position of Mechanic -in -Training for the Water/Wastewater
Department.
Prepared by: Susan Tedesco
REVIEW TEAM ONLY
City Attorney: Finance Director: L J b141 (i -i1
City Manager:
