ITEM #12
CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF JUNE 20, 2006
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: AMER JAKHER, P.E., PW DIRECTOR / CITY ENGINEER
SUBJECT: APPROVE RESOLUTION FOR SUBMISSION OF AN APPLICATION
FOR THE SAFE ROUTE TO SCHOOLS GRANT PROGRAM.
DATE: June 14, 2006
BACKGROUND:
In September 2004 Governor Schwarzenegger signed SB 1087 extending the Safe Routes to
School Program for an additional four years. The program will sunset in January 2008. Caltrans
has opened the application period for the seventh cycle of the Safe Routes to School Grant
Program. The application period closes on June 30, 2006. This funding source is primarily to fund
construction projects that would improve the safety of students who walk or bike to school. Thus,
the program is meant to encourage and influence more students to either walk or bike to school.
Caltrans anticipates a funding level of $24 to $28 million for each year.
DISC USSION/ANALYSIS:
The City requests authorization to submit one application for improvements to the residential area
surrounding Abraham Lincoln Elementary School. The improvements that will be incorporated into
the application include installation of: sidewalk, curb, gutter, stripping, crosswalks and handicap
ramps in the surrounding residential streets.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
At this time the submittal of the application will not have any financial impact. If the grant is
awarded to the City as submitted it must provide ten percent of the total cost of the project. The
match of ten percent will be provided by amending the five year Measure I plan for fiscal year
2007/2008 to include the needed match that will not exceed $30,000.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
Not Applicable.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST:
Not Applicable.
