CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
I -UK GUUNGIL MEEI INU OF March ZU, ZUU7
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
FROM: Bill Smith — Community Services Director
SUBJECT: Approve Resolution Authorizing Acceptance of Playground Award
from First 5 San Bernardino to the Early Childhood Education
Division of the Community Services Division
DATE:
March 12, 2007
BACKGROUND:
The Sierra Vista State Preschool Site has been awarded an Outdoor Playground Environment from
First 5 San Bernardino for their involvement in and implementation of the Recreation Division's
"Mission Nutrition" Program. This Environment includes an outdoor playground structure, ground
covering, shade structure, cement tricycle path, cemented walkway, benches, traffic signals and
signs (for tricycle path), and a 4 -player basketball hoop.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
The current playground at the site is developmentally inappropriate, out of compliance, and
potentially unsafe. There is no place for children to ride tricycles or shoot baskets. The current
walkway for parents consists of uneven stepping pavers. The children, families, staff, and
community will benefit from increased exposure to an outdoor environment that is conducive to the
needs of the children. Sierra Vista Baptist Church is completely supportive of this endeavor, and is
excited to have the equipment installed at their facility.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
There is no General Fund impact as a result of the acceptance of this award. There will be some
minor installation expenses that will be handled through the current expenditure budget in the
Childcare Fund.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
None
CONFLICT OF INTEREST:
The City of Colton does not own the land where the Outdoor Playground Environment is going to be
installed. Sierra Vista Baptist Church is the landowner. First 5 San Bernardino is aware of this and
remains supportive of the award. As mentioned previously, the Church is also fully supportive of this
added amenity for both City and Church programs.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that City Council approve Resolution authorizing acceptance of this playground
award from First 5 San Bernardino, and authorizing the City Manager to execute all agreement
documents.
Attachment: Resolution and MOU
Prepared bv: Christopher M.
