STAFF REPORT ITEM NO. 05 DATE: JUNE 1, 2010 TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIIL FROM: ROD FOSTER, CITY MANAGER r Y PREPARED BY: BILL SMITH, COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR SUBJECT: FACILITY NAMING APPLICATION — GABE CAST RENA FIELD RECOMMENDED ACTION It is recommended that the City Council approve Resolution R-30-10, attaching the name "Gabe Castorena Field" to the northeastern -most ball field in the newly -constructed sports complex at Veterans Park. GOAL STATEMENT The proposed action will support the City's goal to effectively process facility naming applications received from the public, in accordance with City policy, as set by Resolution R-86- 09. BACKGROUND The City has received an Application for the Naming of Parks, Park Features, or Community Facilities, from resident Al Garcia. This application calls for the naming of a ball field at the recently -completed sports complex in Veterans Park. The proposed name is "Gabe Castorena Field." A copy of the application, as well as supporting material provided by the applicant, is attached to this report. ISSUES/ANALYSIS The application has been processed in accordance with Resolution R-86-09, including all posting and noticing requirements. The Recreation & Parks Commission considered the application at its regular meeting of March 17, 2010. After discussion, the Commission voted 5-0 to forward a recommendation to City Council that it approve the application. According to Resolution R-86- 09, the final decision on the application rests with City Council. It should also be noted that the City has, since the processing of this application, received another application for the naming of a ball field at Veteran's Park. Assuming that all remaining ball fields at this location have not been named by this time, this application will be considered by the Recreation & Parks Commission at their next regular meeting on July 21, 2010.
