R-02-93 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF OOLION SUPPORTING IACATION OF A <br />DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE ACO EZ?rING CENTER AT. <br />THE SITE OF NORTON AIR FORCE BASE IN <br />SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA <br />SAS, Norton Air Force Base is in the process of closing as <br />part of our nation's defense reduction, and is therefore being proposed for <br />`carious reuse activities under the jurisdiction of the Inland Valley Develop- <br />ment Agency, and; <br />WHEREAS, Norton AFB has housed for several decades, in addition to <br />flying missions, a large variety of sizeable Air Force support units, in- <br />cluding audit, Inspector General, safety, and audio-visual functions, and; <br />WHEREAS, because of this background and many other similar public <br />and private operations in the general location, the San Bernardino area has <br />an abundance of skilled workers who can respond imemdiately to the needs of <br />such an Accounting Center, and; <br />AREAS, California State University San Bernardino has a highly <br />acclaimed undergraduate and graduate program in accounting, with a great <br />many well-qualified graduates annually, and with other four year and two <br />year colleges and Universities also providing an ample supply of accounting <br />technicians at all levels, and; <br />WHEREAS, the area has experienced, and is continuing to experience, <br />dramatic and debilitating job losses in a great many occupational sectors, <br />as a consequence of both defense reductions and the general economic <br />distress, and; <br />WHEREAS, other recent and planned job -site closures, both military <br />and corporate, including George AFB, Kaiser Steel, Lockheed Aircraft, General <br />Dynamics, and TRW, have similarly devastated the area economically, and; <br />SAS, the San Bernardino area offers an affordable housing <br />market and many other welcome attributes to new employees, even beyond the <br />the sizeable labor force already available, and; <br />SAS, siting of a Defense Accounting Center at Norton AFB enjoys <br />enthusiastic county -wide support, because it becomes a major employer and <br />economic asset throughout our far-flung county and in the multi -county <br />region, and; <br />WHEREAS, the City of Colton will find itself and its workforce <br />similarly benefitted by the location of such a center. <br />
