AGENDA REPORT
For the Council Meeting of July 2, 1996
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
APPROVAL: NABAR ENRIQUE MARTINEZ, CITY MANAGER'
FROM: LES EVANS, INTERIM WATER & WASTEWATER DIRECTOR
SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF EMERGENCY PURCHASE OF WASTEWATER
MECHANICAL DRIVE UNIT IN THE AMOUNT OF $47,936
DATE: JUNE 24, 1996
BACKGROUND:
The Wastewater Treatment Plant's secondary clarifier drive mechanical unit and
platform failed during the week of June 17. The clarifier drive mechanical unit and
platform to set the unit on are required to move the sewage during the secondary
treatment process. The Wastewater Treatment Plant personnel attempted to repair the
equipment, however, due to its age, repairs could not be made.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
Coombs -Hopkins Company is the maker of the unit, and provided a written quote for
replacement unit for a total cost of $47,936 (frieght and tax included). Due to the
urgency in obtaining the unit, the City Manager approved the expenditure.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
The unit is needed to process the sewage through the treatment plant.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The FY95-96 Wastewater Salaries - Benefits Account No. 22-4040-10 is being under
spent due to a vacancy since July, 1995. The Wastewater Salaries - Benefits' savings
are sufficient to cover the cost of the clarifier unit and platform purchase in the amount
of $47,9 6.
i
,,.
Le vans, Interim Water and Wastewater Director
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that Council approve the emergency expenditure of $47,936 for the
purchase of a new clarifier drive unit and platform, from The Coombs -Hopkins
Company, and approve a budget transfer from Wastewater Salaries - Benefits Account
No. 22-4040-10 to the Secondary Wastewater Treatment Plant Repairs Account No.
22-9407-89.
Report Prepared By: Lorraine June
ITEM 3
