CITY OF COLTON <br />AGENDA REPORT <br />FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF APRIL 15,1997 <br />TO: HONORABLE MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL <br />APPROVAL: MALIK DANTALA FREEMAN, CITY MANAGER <br />6 <br />FROM: GRACIE FERNANDEZ HARMON, PERSONNEL DIRECTOR <br />SUBJECT: REQUEST COUNCIL SET SALARY RANGE FOR THE PART-TIME <br />POSITION OF LIFEGUARD AND SENIOR LIFEGUARD IN THE <br />NEIGHBORHOOD SERVICES DEPARTMENT <br />DATE: APRIL 8, 1997 <br />BACKGROUND: With the opening of the Community Center and new swimming pool, the City has had difficulty <br />recruiting qualified Lifeguards. Lifeguards and Senior Lifeguards are part-time positions and are compensated at the <br />hourly rate of $5.50 and $6.25 respectively. <br />DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: The Neighborhood Services Director conducted a survey of surrounding cities and <br />survey results indicated that the average hourly rate for Lifeguards is $8.00. To be able to compete for the limited <br />number of qualified Lifeguards, the Neighborhood Services Director is recommending that we increase the hourly rate <br />for Lifeguard to $6.25 and for Senior Lifeguard to $7.00. These are part-time positions, and receive no other City paid <br />benefits. Failure to recruit and hire a sufficient number of Lifeguards will directly impact the hours of operation of the <br />City's pool. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: This results in additional cost of approximately $1,500 forthe remainder of this fiscal year. <br />This additional amount can be absorbed by the Neighborhood Services Department. Lifeguards and Senior Lifeguards <br />are general fund positions and are funded for the 1996-97 fiscal year as follows: Account No. 100-6200-6203-1040 <br />(salaries - po ch y "ser fees will partially pay for the cost of these positions. <br />Randy L.
