w
CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
Council Meeting of April 21,1998
TO: Honorable Mayor and Council embers
APPROVAL: Henry T. Garcia, City Manag
FROM: Daryl J. Parrish, Assistant City Manager IF
BJECT: Set Compensation for Assistant to the City Manager/Grant
Coordinator and Approve Revision of Job Description,
RESOLUTION NO.
DATE: April 14,1998
BACKGROUND:
On February 21, 1998, the City Council requested that staff move forward with the
recruitment and appointment of a Grant Coordinator. Prior to conducting said
recruitment, staff is suggesting that the existing job description of Assistant to the City
Manager be amended to include the function of Grant Coordination. Additionally, staff
will suggest that the salary range for this position be set at $4532 - $5509 monthly.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
Prior to the preparation of this report, the Personnel Department conducted a salary
survey of cities with established Grant Coordinator positions. The average salary range
in the cities surveyed was between $2848 and $3845 per month. The difference in the
salaries of the two positions at the "A" step is $1684 per month. In order to maximize
the utility of the Grant Coordinator position, staff suggests that the scope of duties be
broadened to include other functions in the City Manager's Office. Such duties include
but are not limited to; serving as the City of Colton's Public Information Officer, assisting
With the coordination of the City Community Access Channel, and assisting with finding
solutions to customer service requests and complaints. These additional duties will
warrant the `reclassification of this position to Assistant to the City Manager/Grant
Coordinator.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The projected General Fund budgetary impact as a result of this reclassified position
including benefits will be an additional $27,276 annually. This increase will be effective
July 1, 1998, the beginning of Fiscal Year 1998/99.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council adopt the revised job description and attached
resolution ;getting the basic compensation rate for the Assistant to the City
Manager/Grant Coordinator, and authorize staff to commence with the recruitment of
this position to be included in the budget for Fiscal Year 1998/99.
Attachments (3)
Item # 10
