CITY OF COLTON <br />AGENDA REPORT <br />FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF AUGUST 4. 1998 <br />TO: Honorable Mayor & City Council <br />APPROVAL: Henry Garcia, City ManageV' <br />FROM: Dennis Morris, Human Resource Director . <br />SUBJECT: Establish a new position in the department, request for recruitment, and <br />ratification of employee appointment in the full time position of Maintenance <br />Worker I in the Community Center Division of the Human/Neighborhood <br />Services Department. <br />DATE: July 28.) 1998 <br />BACKGROUND: There is a need for one (1) Maintenance Worker I position in the Human/ Neighborhood <br />Services Department. Attached is the job description of the classification; the salary range is $1788 - $2174 <br />per month. <br />DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: This position has been filled through a Temporary Agency for 2 years. There <br />are 600 people (adults & children) using the Community Center daily; the building needs constant upkeep <br />and cleanliness. Building Maintenance's staffing does not have the manpower to assign anyone full-time to <br />this facility. <br />The intent of this request is in line with the City Council's desire to lessen the use of temporary <br />agency employees. Recruitment for said position will be conducted and an eligibility list established upon <br />Council approval. The candidate chosen will meet the education and experience requirements as specified <br />in the job description. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: For the last two years the sal arX (no benefits) has been paid through Professional <br />Services, janitorial costs. Funding availability for this general fund position in the fiscal year 98/99 budget <br />funded as follows: Account No. 100-6200-6202-1010 (salary) and Account No. 100-6200-6202-1100 <br />(salary related benefits). Funding will be transferred from the Professional Services account, which will <br />cover all but approximately $2,300.00 of the yearly salary and the benefits. The cost of this employee for <br />last year through the temporary agency was $21,305.00, the added cost to the City to hire an employee <br />permanently will be approximately $900.00. <br />EXPECTED FILL DATE: August 31, 1998 <br />CUSTOMER SERVICE IMPACT: To keep an investment of the Colton Citizens properly maintained to <br />provide the continued services they expect. By providing preventative maintenance regularly, the <br />Community Center will continue to be a opportunity and service to the Colton Citizens. <br />RECOMMENDATION: That City Council amend the 98/99 budget and approve the establishment of the <br />full-time position, recruitment, and ratification of the employee appointment to the position of Maintenance <br />Worker I as recommended by the Human Resource Director. <br />Attachment: Job Description <br />Prepared by: Vicki Porter <br />Item # 10 <br />
