CITY OF COLTON <br />AGENDA REPORT <br />FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF JUNE 2,1998 <br />TO: Honorable Mayor and City ncit <br />APPROVAL: Henry Garcia, City Manage <br />FROM: Dennis Morris, Human Resource Director <br />SUBJECT: Request Certification of Final Action by the Mayor and City Council <br />to Amend Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) ContracttoProvide Section 21547 (Fourth Level of 1959 Survivor Benefits) for <br />Local Fire Members Only <br />DATE: May 20,1998 <br />BACKGROUND Under current labor agreement with the local fire members, only, <br />and Their <br />labor representatives, the Ci has y� <br />City agreed to amend our PERS contract to provide Section 21547 <br />(Fourth Level of 1959 Survivor Benefits) forlocal fire members only. <br />DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS; State law provides a basic framework forthe retirement <br />plan, and <br />some laws are optional for. local agencies, at an additional cost. The present contract does not provide <br />for the fourth level. of 1959 Survivor Benefits. As previously stated, .the employer cost for the Fourth. <br />Level of 1959 Survivor Benefits is $3.90 per month per covered member. The agency will be billed <br />annually and payments may vary depending on the reserve level. Additionally, members electing this <br />coverage will contribute $2.00 per month The majority of the Fire Unit members have elected this <br />coverage and agreed to the elimination of the long term disability <br />plan' and instead to have the City take part of the contribution of 26.77 per m from the "cafeteria <br />offset the cost of, the PERS l� member per month to <br />(Fourth Level of 1959 Survivor Benefits).
