Garcia, City M er <br />FROM: David Michael Davis, Cit Librarian J0 <br />SUBJECT: Approve the Recruitment of One Full -Time Library Assistant I Position <br />DATE: February 25, 1998 <br />BACKGROUND <br />At the November 25, 1997 Library Board of Trustee Meeting, the Board asked staff to request <br />that a recent Library Assistant II vacancy be filled so that the Library can maintain the eighty <br />(80) service hours a week that we currently provide. <br />DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: <br />A comparison of the nine Inland City Libraries (see attached) illustrates that the Colton Public <br />Library has the smallest number of staff (12.5 FTE) of any Inland City Library; yet offers the <br />third highest total number of service hours (80 per week). Moreover, the Colton Public Library <br />has by far the smallest budget. This demonstrates that, in Colton, tax dollars are spent on <br />providing very efficient and high quality library service—not bureaucrats. <br />ALTERNATIVES <br />1. Fill the vacant full-time Library Assistant II position at a total cost of $38,649. <br />2. Leave the position vacant and not maintain current service hours. <br />3. Fill the vacant position with a full-time Library Assistant I position at A Step for a total cost of <br />$32,397. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT <br />Hiring a full-time Library Assistant I employee at A Step to fill the recently vacant full-time <br />Library Assistant II position will save the City a proximately $6,252 in salary and benefits <br />expense. • /�,i L _ /�� <br />David Michael Davis, City Librarian <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Authorize staff to recruit one full-time Library Assistant I employee at A Step at a savings to the <br />general fund of approximately $6,252. <br />Attachment (1) ITEM #5 <br />
