CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
For the Council Meeting of April 18, 2000
To: Honorable Mayor & City Cou I
Approval: Henry T. Garcia, City Manage A
From: Ronald C. Kenny, Director of Parks, Recreation & Family Services
Carolyn Jones, Childcare Manager
Subject: Approval to send Two Childcare Staff and one Community
Member to the Final Phase of the TouchPoints Training in
Boston the week of June 26, 2000.
Date: April 10, 2000
BACKGROUND:
In March Colton Childcare staff attended a five-day training and tours affiliated with the TouchPoints
projects in Boston, Massachusetts. It was the first of a two-part training. The final phase of the training
involves sending two of the original staff from the initial training and one community member to Boston to
participate in the Community Level portion. This training will prepare our childcare center/community to be
a national TouchPoints site; (there are currently 18 TouchPoints sites worldwide).
DISCUSSION / ANALYSIS:
Selected agencies from across the nation apply to these trainings. Colton Childcare is very fortunate in
that it was invited to participate in the training by Dr. T Berry Brazelton. After childcare staff attend this
final training, community childcare will officially become a national TouchPoints site.
CUSTOMER SERVICE IMPACT:
The childcare program will directly benefit from having childcare staff trained in the TouchPoints paradigm,
which emphasizes more than just childcare, but also family growth & development. Staff will subsequently
organize community outreach training in order to assist and enhance family life in Colton.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
None
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
There will be no general fund impact. Funds were raised during the TouchPoints Conference hosted by
Colton Childcare. Staff recommends an increase of the estimated revenue in Acct.#206-7847,
(Donations), by $68,000 and expenditure appropriations in Acct. #'s 206-7200-7202-2350, (Professional
Services), by $46,000 and 206-7200-7202-2280, (Travel & Meetings), by $22,000. The estimated travel
cost of $5,000 would be covered by the revised budget appropriations in Acct. # 206-7200-7202-2280.
Staff recommends authorization for two Colton Childcare staff and one community member to attend the
final phase of the TouchPoints training in Boston, Massachusetts.
Item #15
