CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
For the Council Meeting of March 7, 2000
To: Honorable Mayor & City Council
Approval: Henry T. Garcia, City Managerw
0From: Ron Kenny, Interim Director of Recreation Parks
Carolyn Jones, Childcare Manager
Subject: Authorization for Ronald C. Kenny and Carolyn Jones to
Sign Contract for Appearance of T. Berry Brazelton, et al,
As part of National Seminar Series to be Held in the
Spring Of 2001
Date: February 28, 2000
BACKGROUND:
On January 11 & 12, 2000 Community Childcare sponsored a children's conference (What
Matters Most: Our Children, Our Future) at Loma Linda Medical Center. Dr. T. Berry Brazelton,
internationally respected pediatrician and author, headlined the event as part of a contractual
agreement with Community Childcare. The conference held particular meaning because Dr.
Brazelton only honors 8 conference requests per year (he literally receives hundreds). The two-
day event was designed for the benefit of parents, childcare/medical professionals and
interested members of the community.
Over 400 people from across the state attended the event. Since the conference, we have
received many phone calls thanking us for arranging the conference; in fact many agencies are
now requesting a working relationship with Community Childcare. Dr. Brazelton and his
colleagues expressed their delight at the response and enthusiasm of this community. They
have agreed to do a follow-up conference in the spring of 2001.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
There will be no general fund impact. Funds for expenses will be raised by sponsors located in
San Bernardino and surrounding counties. If the revenue cannot be raised, we will not request
from the general fund and will cancel or allow another agency to take over. All revenue from
sponsors will be placed in account no. 206-7200-7202-7847-0000-000 and seminar related
expenditures will be taken from this account.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
None
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that City Council Authorize Ronald C. Kenny and Carolyn Jones to Sign
Contract for Appearance of T. Berry Brazelton, et al, as part of National Seminar Series to be
Held in the Spring of 2001.
Prepared by: Carolyn Jones
Item #17
