CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF May 2, 2000
TO: Honorable City Council
APPROVAL: Henry Garcia, City Manager —C _ 011 TZ14
FROM: Ron Kenny, Director of Parks, Recreation & Family Services
SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF THE PARKS & RECREATION
COMMISSION'S RECOMMENDATION TO NAME THE
TEE -BALL FIELD AT CESAR CHAVEZ PARK IN
MEMORY OF SALVADOR A. RIOS II, FORMER
COMMISSIONER
DATE: April 20, 2000
BACKGROUND:
Mr. Salvador ("Sal") Rios II spent 26 years in volunteer service to the City of Colton.
During that time he provided leadership, personal commitment and inspiration in the area
of community recreation. Mr. Rios served on numerous boards, held various leadership
positions and was a former City Parks & Recreation Commissioner. He received
numerous forms of recognition over the years to include a proclamation from the City of
Colton in 1998 for service to youth recreation programs. Sal Rios was and will always
remain an example and role model for the residents of Colton.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
Approximately 70 Colton residents signed a petition requesting Mr. Rios be honored by
the naming of the Cesar Chavez Tee -ball field in his memory. The petitions were
brought to the April 19 Parks & Recreation Commission meeting where the Commission
unanimously approved a recommendation to be forwarded to the City Council. Naming
City facilities after distinguished citizens has been a long-standing practice.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends approval of the Parks & Recreation Commission's recommendation to
name the Tee -ball field at Cesar Chavez Park in memory of Salvador ("Sal") Rios II,
former Parks & Recreation Commissioner.
Item #16
