Item #11
CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
For City Council Meeting of July 2, 2002
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: AMER JAHKER, CITY ENGINEER
f.Y7JD)040rT:7.If77i77T.ttr[$Iii[i)I:ryI:i7`iSQVIVI): WiWNIZIMI Ii. 7T7mii
DATE: June 6, 2002
BACKGROUND:
The intersection of La Cadena and L Street is the first intersection south of the Union
Pacific Railroad underpass. A sight distance survey, prepared by the City of Colton Police
Department was presented to the Traffic Safety Committee. This study indicated that the
vertical alignment of the roadway approaching this intersection in a southbound direction
may not provide adequate stopping distance between the point of acquiring a direct line of
sight to the intersection and the painted crosswalk lines.
DISCUSSION:
Based upon that study, the committee determined it would be desirable to remove the
existing painted lines defining a crosswalk at that intersection. The State of California
Vehicle Code defines any intersection as a legal crosswalk. Pedestrian activity studies
have shown that pedestrians are more likely to exercise caution when crossing at an
unmarked location. There is a marked crosswalk 400 feet to the south at M Street.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
Modification can be completed by city forces.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
Improves safety by eliminating conflict with vehicles within the bike lane.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that Council authorize the removal of the painted crosswalk lines at the
intersection of La Cadena Drive and L Street.
Attachments: Attachment : "A"
REVIEW TEAM ONLY
City Attorney:
Finance Director:
City Manager: OTHER:
