Heusterberg, Chief of Police/ APPROVAL: Daryl Parrish, City Manager SUBJECT: Approval to enter into contract with Colton Joint Unified School District to fund the appointment of a Community Service Officer DATE: May 23, 2002 BACKGROUND: The City of Colton has assigned a Police Officer to the Colton High School campus for the past seven years as a Community Resource Officer at no cost to the Colton Joint Unified School District. In an effort to improve our services, the Police Department desires to enter into a contract with the District that would have the District provide up to $50,000.00 to reimburse the City for the costs incurred retaining this position and expanding the officer's responsibilities. At their regular meeting of May 9, 2002, the Board of Education of the Colton Joint Unified School District approved an agreement to allow the District to enter into a contract with the City of Colton Police Department to reimbursement the department an amount not to exceed $50,000.00. ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION: With the funds received through this contract, the Police Department intends to create a new CSO (Community Service Officer) position. The CSO would be utilized in the Police Department to assist in administrative functions that are currently handled by the police officer assigned to the Colton High School campus. This will enable the Police Department to create a second full-time School Resource Officer position for the Colton High School campus and expand the current program to be consistent with the recently approved School Resource Officer program proposed for Colton Middle School. ALTERNATIVES: 1 . Accept Staff recommendation; 2. Do not accept staff recommendation, and do not accept the funds from the CJUSD while continuing to maintain existing program; 3. Do not accept staff recommendation, and withdraw our officer from assignment at Colton High School and return him to other necessary duties. (This option could place our recently accepted COPS in School Grant in jeopardy)
