Item #5
CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF, OCTOBER 5, 2005
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: DILU DE ALWIS —FINANCE DIRECTOR
SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR RECRUITMENT, RATIFICATION OF EMPLOYEE
APPOINTMENT TO NETWORK TECHNICIAN POSITION IN THE
INFORMATION SERVICES DIVISION OF THE FINANCE
DEPARTMENT
DATE: SEPTEMBER 24, 2004
BACKGROUND:
During the; past year, the services provided by the Information Services (IS) division of the
Finance Department, has grown from mere computer systems maintenance to include
communications in Local Area Network (LAN) to cell phones and GIS.
The IS Division of the Finance Department consists of an IS Manager (1), IS Coordinator (1),
Network Technician (2) and Geographic Information Services Technician (1).
The salary range for the Network Technician position is $3,388 - $4,118 per month.
ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION:
The IS division of the Finance Department is responsible for a growing list of tasks which now
include computer hardware/software maintenance, Local Area Network (LAN), wireless
communications, GIS and all computer and communications related purchases (due to
decentralizing of purchasing).
A vacancy exists in IS for a Network Technician (due to the resignation of an employee), and the
existing personnel are unable to keep up with the growing demands of the needs of the City. The
Council's approval to recruit for this position will enable the IS division to respond to service
requests in an expedient manner to minimize computer and communication down time which will
increase productivity, as well as increase the level of services available to internal and external
customers.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Funds are available in the following accounts: 605-6040-6044-1010 (salaries) and 605-6040-
6044-1100 (salary related benefits). This position is in the Internal Service Fund and the costs are
allocated to all users based on the equipment inventory and number of service calls etc.
