ITEM #9 CITY OF COLTON AGENDA REPORT FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF OCTOBER 18, 2005 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL FROM: KENNETH RULON, CHIEF OF POLICE SUBJECT: APPROVE ACCEPTANCE OF A CALIFORNIA STATE OFFICE OF TRAFFIC SAFETY (OTS) GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $173,366.32 AND ADOPT BUDGET AMENDMENT. DATE: OCTOBER 11, 2005 BACKGROUND: On September 29, 2005, the California State Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) awarded the City of Colton Police Department a Grant in the amount of 173,366.32 to be used as detailed in the Traffic Safety Program application. The accompanying Resolution is required to accept this Grant and to amend the budget in the amount of $173,366.32. DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: The OTS Grant was awarded through a competitive process where applicant cities submitted Traffic Safety Projects for review. By working in a cooperative effort with OTS, the Colton Police Department's project was selected to be funded. Funding for the project is by reimbursement and does not require any matching funds. The goal of the Traffic Safety Project is to increase safety to motorists and pedestrians within the City of Colton. Some examples included in the Traffic Safety Program Grant are: • Speed / Radar Trailer • Vehicle Speed Feedback Signs • Radar Speed Equipment • Educational / Promotional Printing • Wireless Communication for Police Motors • Personnel Costs to conduct: o DUI Check Points and Saturation Patrols o Speed Enforcement and Seatbelt Saturation Patrols o Traffic Safety Programs at the High School • Travel Expenses to the OTS Summit Conference. FINANCIAL IMPACT: The accompanying Resolution is required to accept this Grant and to amend the 2005/2006 Fiscal Budget in the amount of $173,366.32.
