CITY OF COLTON p
AGENDA REPORT ,cerRurarea Z
1887
For Council Meeting of FEBRUARY 15, 1994 a ' foto`'
TO:
FROM:
SUBJECT:
't
HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
DATE: February 8, 1994
JOHN HUTTON
Public Works Director
RECOMMENDATION BY TRAFFIC COMMITTEE FOR AUTHORIZATION TO PLACE STOP
SIGNS ON SAN BERNARDINO AVENUE AT INDIGO AVENUE
BACKGROUND:
Residents of the West Valley Park area submitted a request to the cities
Traffic Committee to investigate the possibility of installing stop signs on
San Bernardino Avenue. This location is conducive to pedestrian traffic
crossing to the West Valley Park from the residential developments to the
north.
The Traffic Committee reviewed two possible locations, Eucalyptus Avenue (a
Tee intersection) and. Indigo Avenue (a four way intersection), both
intersecting San Bernardino Avenue, one to the east and one to the west of
the park.
It was determined by the Traffic Committee that increased traffic generated
by the opening of the newly constructed county facility on Indigo Avenue
would generate additional traffic volumes at its intersection with San
Bernardino Avenue. Additionally, this location provided better visibility of
pedestrians crossing at this intersection by approaching vehicles.
DISCUSSION/CONCLUSIONS:
The Traffic Committee is basing its recommendation on several safety factors
as follows:
1. Best visibility at intersection by approaching vehicles
2. A four way intersection accommodating cross traffic from both north
and south side streets
3. Existing street lighting at the intersection on both north and
south sides.
4. Most central location between major intersections, accommodating
both pedestrian traffic to the park and business center area.
