Kivley, Assistant to the City Manager /Q Subject: Adopt Resolution for Accurate Names for Hist: mar Date: June 12, 2001 BACKGROUND During the spring of 2000, the Commission began reviewing the records from the prior years. During this same timeframe, the Commission requested staff compile additional information regarding the existing Historic Landmarks. Information such as date established as a landmark, corresponding resolution number, etc. with copies of this information centrally located. Finally, the Commission requested a list including dates and names of all the former Council Members serving on the City Council since the City's incorporation in 1887 for inclusion in the Historic Catalogue. DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS While conducting the research requested by the Commission, staff discovered two typographical inaccuracies. That is, the fully correct names were not used for two facilities designated by the City Council as Historic Landmarks. In the fall of 2000, staff presented this information to the Historic Preservation Commission. At that time, the Commission requested staff present a resolution to the City Council correcting the names. The following information is relative to each facility. Fleming Park: The City Council passed, approved and adopted Resolution No R-111-89 (copy attached) on August 15, 1989 designating Fleming Park as Historic Landmark No 2 within the City of Colton. In doing the research regarding prior Council Members, staff determined that by Ordinance No 438, the City of Colton accepted a deed from California Portland Cement Company dedicating the land, naming, and designating the park at "Thomas J. Fleming Memorial Park. This information is in the minutes for the City Council Adjourned Regular Meeting of September 29, 1926. Carnegie Public Library Building: The City Council passed, approved and adopted Resolution No R-98-91 (copy attached) on October 22, 1991, designating the Colton Museum as Historic Landmark No. 8 within the City of Colton. Both the State of California and the United States Park Service National Register of Historic Locations reflect this facility as the Carnegie Public Library. Since the building only acquired the name;.Colton Museum in 1985, and to maintain consistency with the two other designations, it is appropriate to request the name change and correct the original designation. The Historic Preservation Commission approved the submission of this item to the City Council at its meeting on June 13, 2001. Item #17
