ITEM NO. 0 5
STAFF
Ipp *ATE
DATE: JANUARY 19, 2010
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR ANDCITY
FROM: ROD FOSTER, CITY MANAKER
PREPARED BY: BOB MILLER, POLICE CHIEF
SUBJECT: EMPLOYEE LEAVE OF
RECOMMENDED ACTION
It is recommended that the City Council approve the leave of absence for Sergeant Von Eric
Miller.
GOAL STATEMENT
This action supports the City's goal of providing a safe, supportive and nurturing work
environment.
BACKGROUND
Sergeant Von Eric Miller, an employee of 21 years, is requesting a leave of absence beginning
on February 1, 2010, for up to one year. He is requesting this leave of absence so that he may
complete the recruitment and training process and serve a 12 month assignment as an
international police officer. Sgt. Miller is also requesting that he be allowed to cash out two
hundred hours from his sick leave bank.
Although we have had no similar leaves of absence in the past, we did assist one officer who was
called back to active duty and is currently stationed in Afghanistan.
ISSUES/ANALYSIS
This leave of absence will create a vacancy in a cover sergeant position in the police department.
The department has made adjustments to fill the void. Sgt. Miller will be obtaining education
and assisting in the training of international police forces. Staff anticipates Sgt. Miller bringing
valuable international policing techniques and information back to the department upon
completion of his assignment.
