CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR CITY COUNCIL MEETING OF DECEMBER 16,199
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
APPROVAL: LEN WOOD, INTERIM CITY MANAGER
FROM: JOHN C. HUTTON, PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR 4!5'0
SUBJECT: APPROVE AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 10.04,
SECTION 16.A OF THE COLTON MUNICIPAL CODE,
ADOPTING SPEED LIMITS UPON THE STREETS IN THE
CITY OF COLTON
DATE:
DECEMBER 4, 1997
BACKGROUND:
Section 40802 of the State of California Vehicle Code requires the local jurisdiction to
adopt an Ordinance setting the speed limits upon streets greater than forty feet in
width. Those speeds are to be set at the eighty-fifth percentile speed of the vehicles
using that street, as determined by a Traffic and Engineering Study. A survey has
been completed and the proposed speed limits have been organized into Ordinance
Format.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
This item was presented to City Council at the meeting of October 7, 1997 for First
Reading and again on October 21, 1997 for Second Reading. At that meeting, two of
those speed limits were questioned as being too fast. Those two items were returned
to the Consulting Engineer for further review. The Engineer has determined, based
upon data supplied by the City of San Bernardino Traffic Engineering Division, that the
proposed speed limit on Hunts Lane could be reduced to 45 MPH. The Engineer has
also determined that the lane widths on Washington Street justify reducing the speed
limit to 45 MPH.
ALTERNATIVES
None.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None
Item # 2
