Item #4 <br />CITY OF COLTON <br />AGENDA REPORT <br />FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF February 19, 2002 <br />Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />ROVAL: Daryl Parrish, City Manager <br />FROM: City Attorney <br />ECT: Amendments to the Colton Municipal Code Relating to the Sale of <br />Tobacco Products to Minors <br />TE: February 19, 2002 <br />�—U•ixc]:%11111133 <br />Everyone, including the tobacco industry, agrees that children should not use tobacco <br />products. In an effort to ensure that minors are not given the opportunity to purchase <br />tobacco products at locations within the City, the City Attorney has been requested to <br />draft the attached Ordinance restricting the sale of tobacco products. <br />DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: <br />The provisions proposed to be added to the Municipal Code concerning the sale of tobacco <br />products are summarized as follows: <br />• Prohibit the sale of tobacco products by means of vending machines or self-service <br />displays. <br />• Require presentation of identification for persons who appear to be younger than <br />26 years old prior to the sale of any tobacco product. <br />• Require tobacco product retailers to post signs warning of the prohibition of sales of <br />tobacco products to minors. <br />• Allow tobacco product retailers 60 days to achieve compliance with the tobacco <br />sales restrictions set forth in this Ordinance. <br />ALTERNATIVES: <br />Take no action. <br />
