CITY OF COLTON <br />AGENDA REPORT <br />FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF May 7, 2002 <br />TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />FROM: Ron Kenny, Director of Parks, Recreation & Family Services <br />SUBJECT: Use of Fleming Park for a Unity Prayer March <br />DATE: May 1, 2002 <br />Item #11 <br />BACKGROUND: <br />A Unity Prayer March has been requested to begin in Fleming Park and continue to Cesar Chavez Park on <br />Saturday, May 18, 2002. It is being coordinated by local resident Salley "Celya" Barela to coincide with the <br />City's initial Unity Day Celebration. Ms. Barela's event has the approval of the Unity Day Committee. <br />DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: <br />The Unity Prayer March would include prayers and speakers within the park beginning at 8:00 a.m. At 9:00 <br />a.m. approximately 300 marchers would walk from Fleming Park along "F" Street east across La Cadena <br />Drive. They would continue traveling east on "F" Street to "10th" Street. At "10th" Street the marchers <br />would tum north traveling to "E" Street and on into the park. <br />The route of march has been reviewed and approved by the Police Department. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: <br />Staff time for both the Police Department and the Parks, Recreation and Family Services Department will be <br />minimal given that these departments will already be providing services as part of the Unity Day <br />Celebration. <br />ENVIROMENTAL IMPACT: <br />None <br />ALTERNATIVE RECOMMENDATION: <br />Denial of the March, but approval of activities within Fleming Park between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br />Staff recommends approval of the use of Fleming Park & Band shell and the route of march for a Unity <br />Prayer March in conjunction with the City sponsored Unity Day. <br />Attachment: Facility Reservation Form <br />REVIEW TEAM ONLY <br />City Attorney: _�A f/A I� Finance Director: <br />TV Idi-- <br />City Manager: OTHER: <br />
