R-84-95.
Motion by Mayor Fulp, seconded by Councilmember Cook, to approve Resolution No.
R-84-95.
Councilmember Bennett stated the State is looking at using gas tax money to
bail-out Los Angeles and/or Orange Counties. The resolution will be sent to the
Governor opposing this action.
The motion was carried with a unanimous vote.
Considerincr Gamincr Proposal.
Charles Casto, 292 East "E" Street, Colton, Minister of the Church of the
Nazerene, stated it is wise to refrain from taking the first step. Families
suffer and children suffer the most. Socially, a debilitating complex can
emerge as well as medical problems. The crime rates in Nevada and Atlantic City
increased dramatically after gambling was allowed.
Jean Shaw, Wife of the Pastor of Colton Foursquare Church, stated she was here
to speak as a mother and a grandmother. Ms. Shaw stated she strongly urges a
"no" vote on this item. A "yes" vote would bring a wrong concept of morality to
our youth. Family values are bad enough in the nation without endorsing a card
club in our very awn community. The card club would bring the wrong element
into our community, not those interested in family life. Ms. Shaw gave an
example of a man buying groceries with food stamps and then buying $20 worth of
lottery tickets.
Jean Hart, stated she would like the people to vote on this item.
Delbert Shaw, Pastor of Colton Foursquare Church, stated he has been a resident
for 42 years. As a minister of Colton, he is offended by anyone trying to lower
the standards by bringing a card room into the City. Gambling has always been a
cancer in our society. Pastor Shaw asked the Council to keep the City clean,
6
AUG 1 5 1995
