* Councilmember Sanders recognized Mr. Nitin Modi in the audience and called him <br />forward to be introduced to the public. <br />AGENDA REVIEW: <br />Motion/second by Mayor Fulp/CM Bennett to add as Item 9A to the Agenda, the request for <br />alley closure by the Living Springs Church, as there is a need to take immediate action, pursuant <br />to Government Code Section 54954.2(b) (2), and the matter arose subsequent to the posting of <br />the Agenda, pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2(a). Motion carried, with <br />Councilmember Hutton absent. <br />As requested, Item #13 and Item #14 pulled. <br />MAYOR AND COUNCIL ITEMS: (continued) <br />Presentation. Awards. Proclamations <br />* Taormina Industries. Inc./Colton Disposal - Tom Vogt, President of Taromina <br />Industries/Colton Disposal, announced this was the last in a series of transition updates <br />to keep Council and the residents of the City of Colton aware of their progress. He <br />introduced the members of the Colton Disposal Team: Ric Collett, Vice -President of <br />Operations; Leticia Mercado, Customer Service Manager; Ernie Langley, Operations <br />Manager; and Jose Ortiz, Assistant Operations Manager. He also acknowledged the <br />drivers who made the transition from working for the City to their company and said <br />they were the key members of their team. He listed the benefits to the community since <br />service began: The City received $3 million from Colton Disposal as part of the contract <br />award; Colton Disposal pays to the City over $80,000 a year to manage and cover all <br />contract administration costs incurred yearly and increases with inflation; the residents <br />have seen a 15 % reduction in their monthly residential sanitation bill; the residents have <br />seen equipment upgrades and a higher level of service; all sanitation employees were <br />offered positions with Taormina Industries/Colton Disposal; and as a member of the <br />community, Colton Disposal went through all the alleys and picked up over 55 tons of <br />trash which was not a requirement of the contract. <br />Ric Collett, Vice -President of Operations, explained the details of the process of the <br />conversion which began three months ago which included: Community Outreach <br />Program; Recycle Colton Program; presentations at public town hall meetings and to <br />civic and community groups; established a local office located across from the civic <br />center to serve the needs of the community; a month by month summary of the <br />operational highlights since May 1996; Automated Collection Program; increase in <br />recycling from 4.5% to 22.5% for paper, plastic and aluminum and 27% of the yard <br />waste all of which is being diverted from the landfill; Bulky Item Collection, four times <br />a year; and concluded with a short video highlighting the program. <br />4 <br />OCT 15 1996 <br />
