District 1
Councilmember Sanders echoed comments from fellow Members and welcomed the
Mayor and newly elected Councilmembers. The bottom line, he said, is that the
people in the community, and the nation, are looking for moderation, peace and
harmony and that Council come together and move the City's agenda forward.
City Clerk
City Clerk Barrera thanked those people who voted for her, especially those who
expressed their support and encouragement during her campaign and acknowledged
her campaign committee of one for keeping her spirits up and making this day a reality
- her husband Ray.
City Treasurer
City Treasurer Williams appreciated the Citizens' vote of confidence and promised to
continue in his endeavors to safeguard the assets of the City. He said he would do
his utmost to assist City staff. He looked forward to a new era.
Mayor
Mayor Gaytan introduced his wife Genevieve, his solid support at all of his endeavors;
stepson Victor Rodriguez, Tony and Jenny Perez, Armando and Terry Buenrostro and
his campaign manager and wife, Frank and Susan Ybarra.
Initially, to develop direction, Mayor Gaytan said he would ask questions from staff
and citizens. With Council working together, he planned to put Colton back on a
positive course. To spur economic development, he proposed to change the way the
City has done business in the past. As business friendly, he wanted businesses to
feel they have an opportunity to succeed in Colton. He held it was important that
employees be customer service oriented and show customers they are valued. To
establish a peaceful working environment, he espoused the need to depoliticize our
City Staff and to instill a performance, accountability -based assessment, connected
to achievement, so that City employees will have a sense of being treated fairly. He
believed Council must turn the City's economic picture to coincide with what is
happening with the State. He believed there was a need to stabilize the City's
resources. If Council takes control of spending, secures bond rating to prove stability
to the City's finance and treats all employees fairly, Mayor Gaytan declared that
Council would be stepping in the right direction in bringing the City back as a whole.
He encouraged the residents to contact him with any concerns they may have.
El
