Mr. Don Benfield, Colton Firefighters Local 935, provided updates on the RACES and CARES <br />Programs. <br />MAYOR AND COUNCIL ITEMS: <br />COMMENTS, INTER -GOVERNMENTAL AGENCY REPORTS, INFORMATION SESSION: <br />District 4 <br />CM Cook reported on the clean-up of Veterans Park which was attended by 47 volunteers. She <br />thanked all who participated. She said the ongoing plan is to do one park a month and Daur Park <br />is set for October 4, 1997, then Fleming Park on November 1'. CM Cook stated that on 9'h street, <br />there are crossing signals that have not been painted in 25 years and said they would be changed <br />and updated. She said the rails would be taken out on 9"' street and replaced and that the switching <br />plate in the middle of the street would be removed and replaced as well. She concluded that he <br />work would be done within 60 days. <br />Mayor Gaytan commended CM Cook for her excellent work with railroad concerns. <br />District 5 <br />After meeting with Assemblyman Fred Aguiar, CM Bennett reported that the "red light" bill was <br />approved, doubling the fine, with half of the fine returning to the issuing jurisdiction. Also <br />approved was a $1.7 billion tax cut, over the next 3 years, to benefit every taxpayer; welfare <br />reform, job reward incentive; decrease fees for higher education; establish uniform student testing <br />programs; and fully funded reduced class sizes (K-3). For a future agenda, in light of the money <br />going to the County, she requested a resolution for reduction of the booking fees be prepared. <br />CM Bennett announced the opening of the Mabuhay, a Filipino Restaurant, on Washington Street. <br />Mayor Gaytan thanked CM Bennett for her hard work on the San Timoteo area through <br />SANBAG. <br />District 6 <br />CM Sandoval encouraged residents to shop in Colton and invited all to the grand opening of the <br />Zendejas Sports Bar and Grill on October 3d. <br />District 3 <br />CM Chastain recognized All Star Auto which recently refurbished its area. She suggested that the <br />park clean-up could open a program through Public Works for street clean-up. <br />District 2 <br />CM Hutton commended CM Cook for the Park Clean -Up program she initiated. He believed the <br />new Medical Center will open in less than a year and made a suggestion for revenues. <br />District 1 <br />CM Sanders said June 1998 was the target opening for the Medical Center; shared dynamic <br />changes to that area; commended Council for its retreat; submitted a correction for January 10 for <br />SEP 16 1997 <br />City Council Minutes September 16, 1997 3 <br />
