ITEM #6
CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF FEBRUARY 19, 2008
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: BOB MILLER, CHIEF OF POLICE
SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF OFFICE OF TRAFFIC SAFETY GRANT AND
RESOLUTION FOR $134,830.91
DATE: January 29, 2008
BACKGROUND:
The Police Department Traffic Division utilizes funding provided by the California Office of
Traffic Safety (OTS) to staff equipment, officers and fund programs related to motorist
safety.
These programs, which are overtime based, are completely funded by the Office of Traffic
Safety (OTS) through the "Grants Made Easy" program. The Office of Traffic Safety works
with local law enforcement to reduce deaths, injuries and economic losses resulting from
traffic related collisions. These goals will be accomplished by funding provided by OTS to
increase traffic safety. The funding provided by OTS is utilized for impaired driving
enforcement, to encourage seat belt usage, speed enforcement, and increase bicycle
safety.
The Traffic Division has utilized funding from OTS for the past several years to obtain
equipment, staff DUI check points and saturation patrols that the department would
otherwise have been required to fund.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
The objectives (as outlined in the grant application) are intended to help reduce the
number of motorists killed or injured in traffic collisions in the City of Colton.
The funding requested in the 2008/2009 grant cycle will provide two BMW motorcycles,
with associated radio and radar equipment, to assist the city in deferring the cost of
replacing the current aging fleet of BMW motorcycles. The grant will fund four DUI
checkpoints, seven DUI saturation patrols, seven special enforcement operations targeting
red light violators, five special enforcement operations targeting intersections with a
disproportionate number of traffic collisions, five special enforcement operations targeting
speeding drivers, and increase the total number of vehicles towed for thirty days by ten
percent.
