CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
For Council Meeting of January_ 19 , 1 g 9 3
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: JACK.. H. STRATTON, CHIEF OF POLICE
(::r
SUBJECT: Date:
AWARD OF CONTRACT TO JAGUAR/MICROAGE FOR 1-13-93
OFFICE AUTOMATION LOCAL AREA NETWORK
BACKGROUND
The City of Colton Police Department presently utilizes numerous
stand-alone personal computers throughout the department, using a
variety of application software. The City is standardizing its
software and upgrading the capabilities of all existing personal
computers to meet present and future demands in office management.
DISCUSSION
The police department adopted the use of word processing technology
in its office management many years ago by changing to the use of
personal computers in an office environment. Since that initial
change over, technology has advanced by leaps and bounds. In
attempts to stay abreast of these changes, our office automation has
become very piecemeal, inefficient, and lacks integration. These
problems were recognized by the police department, as well as by the
City, therefore an Ad Hoc committee was formed to further identify
existing problems and alternative solutions. Kerry Consulting Group
was retained to provide professional guidance.
It was determined that a local area network is needed to interconnect
existing personal computer work stations and to provide for
additional work stations for the purpose of running a variety of
applications in office automation software.
The need for city-wide uniformity was paramount in any recommendation
by the committee in the implementation in both hardware and software
to provide for consistency throughout the City. The purposed local
area network system meets the standardization mandate. The local
area network systems provides for the uniformity of resourcesandthe
ability to share those resources.
Attachments:
Page 1,of _—
Item No. -J
