CITY OF COLTON MAINTENANCE WORKER M DEFINITION: Under general supervision to perform a variety of skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, repair IR and service in various activities in the Community Services Department; to supervise, lead and perform as a member of a small crew; to operate power -driven maintenance and construction equipment; and to perform other related work as assigned. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: Work in this class includes performing work of a manual nature which requires a high degree of mental and physical dexterity in order to do an effective job. Assignments often include the operation of power -driven maintenance equipment and construction equipment, automotive and other related equipment. Work is performed under general supervision., Incumbent may be assigned to lead a crew and to fill in for superior or subordinates in their absence. Enforces safe working practices. May participate in an emergency stand-by program. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties include, but are not limited to, the following. Parks Division: As assigned to the tree crew: Supervises and performs tasks in trimming, topping and pruning of trees, utilizing a boom/bucket truck. Removes trees and shrubs utilizing a backhoe/loader, dump truck and craneltruck; plants trees and shrubs within the City. Maintains chainsaws, polesaws, loppers. Sharpens and cleans equipment as needed. Trains personnel on safety and proper equipment usage. Be able to operate in a safe and efficient manner all equipment within the scope of this Division. Street Division: As assigned to the asphalt crew: Makes general street repairs such as skin patching, crack sealing, reconstructions, and overlays, repairs utility cuts. Places curb matches and makes other improvements involving the placement of asphalt materials. Maintains asphalt tools and equipment. Occasionally required to perform concrete, paint, sign, weed abatement or the public works crew as the need arises. As assigned to the concrete crew: Sets forms, pours, cuts and finishes concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways, sewer manholes, catch basins and other improvements. Constructs block walls. Maintains concrete tools and equipment. Occasionally required to perform on a sign, asphalt, paint, weed abatement or other public works crew as the need arises. As assigned to the paint crew: Performs street and curb painting and stenciling. Operates stripers and spray guns. Mixes and prepares paints. Paints City buildings, facilities and equipment. Maintains paint shop in an orderly and safe condition. Occasionally required to perform on an asphalt, concrete, sign, weed abatement or other public works crew as the need arises. As assigned to the sign crew: Makes, installs and repairs all traffic and miscellaneous signs. Keeps inventory of signs and sign materials in stock. Operates vacuum sign face applicator. Occasionally required to perform on an asphalt, concrete, paint, weed abatement or other public works crew as the need arises.
